Notes from Matara lecture – boosting your career through volunteering:

There was a very interesting presentation on volunteer work in Finland held this week (08/11/16). We learned how many organizations are currently active in Finland along with the process in setting up an organization and what steps it entails. They went into a small bit of detail regarding associations you can volunteer with when in Finland. Employment opportunities which you can avail of were also briefly discussed. Sports clubs, culture associations and student and youth societies were some of the examples given. We learned that central Finland alone has 7688 registered associations which is quite large for such a small demographic area. One of the main topics which caught everybody’s attention was the career opportunities and how volunteering can help you in your future endeavors. The main points presented were:

  • Know how and skills needed in the working life
  • Professional skills
  • Thesis and internship opportunities
  • Language learning
  • Projects
  • Contacts and References
  • Networking

There were figures presented to us on the ages of volunteer’s through-out these organizations and also the statistics of how many males and females volunteer. You can see these figures in the pictures below.

“Voluntary work is work that springs from one’s own desire, it is unpaid and it is done for the benefit of an organization that corresponds with one’s own values. It is a sign of one’s desire to participate and to make a difference and it should be everyone’s right “

Henrietta Grönlund
